Keeping in form with the Ryder Cup posts, even The Wee Ice Man can get exasperated by the mighty British Press. I’m glad to see the media was as scrupulous as they are today. Imagine if they had Twitter!

The Backgroud – Ryder Cup Steaks Argued in Britian
It must have been a slow news cycle because in 1949, Ben Hogan and the Ryder Cup team brought over “600 steaks, a half dozen hams, and four boxes of bacon with them.” This is hilarious for many reasons: one, because it is fitting. Have you ever tried to find a good burger anywhere in the UK – it’s impossible! Two, they use the “British golfers and their wives” as scapegoats for the act. I am not sure what percentage of the beef was consumed by the home team, but I’d bet the bank that our players enjoyed our beef much more than they did.
Hogan’s Humor
There are very few examples of Hogan’s humor but this is one of the best. After the meat was in the news’ cycle for twelve days, Captain Hogan responded by saying: “I can’t even find any golf news. Next time I guess we’ll have to leave our clubs at home and just have a meat show.”

Nice article and good research. It was impressive to see the actual NYT article from 1949 in your blog. Would like to see more of same on Ben Hogan during that post war time period. Thanks. Tom
Thanks for the comment. I’ll keep an eye for your request during my readings.
